The Slovene Matura Programme

Gimnazija Bežigrad is a state secondary school that offers a four year high school programme that prepares students for university studies. The majority of students at our school – ever one thousand – are Slovene nationals who attend the state's National Programme. Student are selected on the basis of their grades form elementary school and the results of their entrance exams in Slovene and Mathematics. Our highly professional staff, assisted by excellent school facilities, provide out students with an academically challenging educational experience.

Students are encouraged to develop in the following fields: sciences, mathematics, languages, and sports. Besides the regular curriculum, students can improve their skills and knowledge by joining various clubs such as: languages (French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Latin), arts (drawing, painting, sculpture), video, photo, sports (table tennis, basketball, cheer leading, fitness), drama, music band, chess, mathematics, logic, physics, biology, social service. Students are encouraged to continue their activities outside of school, therefore, many students attend music school and/or practice sports.

Our students who have taken part in national competitions are ranked among the best in the country and abroad. Every year, some of our students are selected for the Olympiad teams for mathematics, physics and chemistry. Ninety nine per cent of the students at our school achieve a passing grade. Our students' results in the secondary school diploma exams, called Matura, rank our school among the most successful in the country. Matura holders continue their studies at the university level, mostly in Ljubljana and Maribor.

The subjects studied at our school are: Slovene (the language of instruction), English, German, French, Italian, Latin, Arts, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, Computing, Psychology, Social Sciences, and Philosophy. Students are also taught how to write and produce projects and research essays, how to perform experimental work, and how to use library resources.

 

Grading system

Students are assessed internally except for the Matura exams which are externally assessed.

Grades rank from five (top grade) to one (failing grade). At the end of the year, students are graded in each subject and also receive a grade for general excellence, which consists of the grade point average. To achieve a passing grade, students have to demonstrate a minimum of fifty per cent knowledge of the subject matter. If a student fails in up to three subjects s/he can resit the exams at the beginning of July or at end of August. If a student fails a Matura exam, s/he can resit the exam at the beginning of September.

 

Matura

The Matura consists of external exams given at the end of the fourth year of secondary education. All students who wish to pass the Matura have to take the following subjects:

• Slovene language and literature: HL
• Mathematics: HL or SL
• Language B: English HL or SL, German HL or SL
• Electives: two more of the subjects listed among the high school subjects.

Students are graded from eight points for top grade in high level subjects to one point which is a failing grade. They have to resit the subject if they are awarded one. The grade points are added up to a maximum of thirty four points. They are admitted into university on the basis of the points achieved at the Matura and the grades in the last two years of the secondary school.
