Enrolment process for the 2026/2027 school year

Students must apply for enrolment in the 1st year of secondary education by April 2, 2026. If they are applying using a paper application form, they will submit it to their elementary school, which will then forward the applications to the selected secondary schools by the specified deadline.

With enrolment for the 2026/27 school year, the option to submit applications electronically is also being introduced; students can access this form via the website of the Ministry of Education: https://www.gov.si/teme/vpis-v-srednjo-solo/.

Information on the status of applications will be available on the Gimnazija Bežigrad website (https://www.gimb.org).

Students may transfer their application to another high school no later than May 6. Students who originally submitted their application in person may pick up their application form in the morning between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. at our counselling office, where they will also receive all additional information regarding enrolment and transfer. Students who originally submitted their application electronically will also resubmit it electronically in the same manner as they submitted the original application. After May 6, applications for enrolment cannot be resubmitted until the selection process at schools with enrolment limits is complete (June 29).

Students applying to the sports department /gimnazija (š)/ must be registered athletes, as evidenced by the official Register of Registered and Categorized Athletes. These students must submit the following supporting documents by March 4, 2026:
1. a medical certificate from a personal physician or a specialist in occupational and sports medicine, or a certificate of a regular preventive medical examination of the candidate within the last year, indicating the candidate’s general state of health;
2. a certificate from the national sports federation for enrolment in the sports department, containing information on the candidate’s athletic achievements over the past two years; and
3. a statement from the coach regarding cooperation with the sports coordinator

All forms are available on the MVI website at:

Enrolment limit

If the number of applicants specifically for the high school program and specifically for the high school (specialized) program at the school exceeds the number specified in the call for applications, the school will, in agreement with the Minister of Education, adopt a decision to limit enrolment.

Applicants for admission to Gimnazija Bežigrad will be notified in writing of all details regarding any selection process by June 5, 2026.

Pursuant to the MVI’s directive, applicants enrolling in high schools for the 2025/26 school year will be ranked for admission to programs with enrolment limits based on the sum of percentages calculated using the formula below, where:

  • the sum of final grades in all required subjects from the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades of elementary school (Sk) accounts for a maximum of 60 percent of the total sum (S),
  • the results on the national assessment of knowledge in the language of instruction (Slovenian, Italian, or Hungarian in ethnically mixed areas – U) and mathematics (M), expressed as percentage points, each account for a maximum of 20 percent of the total sum.

For candidates applying for admission to the gimnazija (š) – sports department program, athletic achievements are also taken into account in the selection process, as follows:

  • 10 points are awarded for obtaining Athlete A status, and
  • 5 points are awarded for obtaining Athlete B status.

If, in the first or second round of the selection process at a particular school, multiple candidates with the same number of points are ranked at the lower cutoff, the selection among them is made based on the scores achieved on the national proficiency tests in the native language and mathematics. If, despite this, there are still multiple candidates at the lower cutoff, the selection among them will be made based on the NPZ in Slovenian.

For candidates who, for valid reasons, do not have results on the national proficiency tests in Slovenian and mathematics (the same applies to candidates who completed elementary school abroad), a substitute score will be determined in the event of enrolment restrictions. This will be calculated by assigning the median NPZ score of those candidates who have the same total of final grades in these subjects (SLO or MAT) in grades 7, 8, and 9 as the NPZ score for the candidate who, for valid reasons, does not have an NPZ score.

In the event of enrolment restrictions, the school will select students for 90% of the available spots in the first round based on the aforementioned criteria. Students will be notified of the selection results by June 19, 2026. On that day, successful students will be enrolled, while the remaining students will be informed of available spots at high schools and provided with instructions for participating in the second round of the selection process.

In the second round, students who were not accepted in the first round will be able to apply for the remaining 10% of available spots at all high schools that will limit enrolment—including Gimnazija Bežigrad – as well as for all remaining spots at high schools that do not have enough applicants. In this case, students will use a special form to rank up to ten schools or programs in order of preference for which they would like to apply. They will be notified of their placement at one of the selected schools on June 29, 2026. Students accepted to our school in this round will also enrol the following day. The others will pick up their application and documents, immediately take them in person to the school to which they are assigned, and enrol there.
