Information on Enrolment in the International Baccalaureate Programme for the 2027/28 school year
Gimnazija Bežigrad, Peričeva 4, Ljubljana, is accepting 22 students into the International Baccalaureate programme for the 2027/28 school year. The program intensively prepares students to complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Successful completion of the programme enables enrolment at universities in Slovenia and abroad.
Enrolment requirements:
- age 16 to 17;
- completion of the second year of high school (four-year programme) in the 2026/27 school year with an overall academic performance of at least “very good”;
- an academic performance of at least “very good” in the subjects of Slovenian, Italian, or Hungarian as a native language, English, and mathematics;
- • Active participation in cultural and sports activities, as well as participation in various competitions (national, Olympiads) in mathematics, languages, natural sciences, computer science, and similar subjects.
Application process:
- Students must submit their application using a special form, which they can obtain—along with information about the International Baccalaureate programme—from the Gimnazija Bežigrad website;
- The application must be accompanied by a photocopy of the first-year report card and a transcript of second-year grades;
- evidence of participation and success in extracurricular activities and proof of achievements in competitions.
Candidates must send their application with the required documentation by certified mail to the school, marked “IB 2027,” in March 2027 (the exact date will be announced later). Each student may submit only ONE application—to only one school that offers the International Baccalaureate programme.
The final selection will be made following personal interviews with candidates in April.
Incomplete applications and those received after the specified deadline will not be considered.
Students will be notified of the selection results in May 2027.
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)
The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is an internationally recognized two-year educational program for high school students in their final two years of high school. It is administered by the International Baccalaureate (IB), a nonprofit educational organization headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The programme is designed for students who wish to develop critical thinking, research skills, and international understanding, and to prepare for study at universities in Slovenia and abroad.
The IB provides the curriculum, external assessment, and teacher training, and ensures the quality of programme implementation in all authorized schools worldwide.
Curriculum
Students select six subjects, of which three or four must be at the Higher Level (HL), and the remainder at the Standard Level (SL).

- Physics – HL / SL

- Computer Science – HL / SL
Group 5 – Mathematics
- Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches – HL / SL
- Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation – HL / SL
Group 6 – Art
- Visual Arts – HL / SL
Instead of a course from Group 6, a student may choose an additional course from Groups 2, 3, or 4 (depending on the course schedule and course availability).
Elective courses are offered only if a sufficient number of students enrol in them.
Diploma Programme Core
In addition to the six subjects, all students must complete three required components of the program:
- Extended Essay (EE) – an independent research project of approximately 4,000 words.
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK) – an interdisciplinary subject that encourages reflection on the nature of knowledge and the critical evaluation of information.
- Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) – a programme that promotes personal development through creative, athletic, and volunteer activities.
Assessment
Each subject is graded on a scale from 1 to 7, with 7 being the highest grade. In addition to subject grades, a student can earn up to 3 additional points for successfully completing TOK and the extended essay, meaning a maximum of 45 points can be achieved in total. To receive the diploma unconditionally, students must earn a grade of 4 in each of the six subjects (24 points) and satisfactorily complete the TOK course, the extended essay, and CAS—the required elective components.
To earn the International Baccalaureate Diploma, candidates must successfully fulfil all programme requirements in accordance with the rules of the International Baccalaureate Organization.
Subject selection
Upon enrolment, students select six subjects according to the following guidelines:
- Slovenian is a required subject at the Higher Level,
- English and Mathematics are required subjects (depending on the selected level),
- students must select one subject from the Individuals and Societies group and one from the Natural Sciences group,
- the sixth subject may be a subject from the Arts group or an additional subject from Groups 2, 3, or 4.
Due to the organization of classes, certain subject combinations are not possible when selecting the sixth subject.
Recognition of the Diploma
The International Baccalaureate Diploma is recognized by universities around the world, including Slovenian higher education institutions. Successfully completing the International Baccalaureate opens the door for students to study at numerous prestigious universities both at home and abroad.
